The original Bungalow was vacant and dilapidated when it was decided by the State to be converted into a Visitor’s Gallery, which will be opened for public. That single direction become the defining factor in determining the complexity of the Spatial Programme. With a total built-up area of approximately 410 sm (4412 sf), the original house built for a family sized of average 4 – 6 must now be prepped to accommodate a total of 100 -150 persons at any single point of time. The Visitor Gallery which was named officially as Penang Hill Gallery @ Edgecliff was envisioned to be a one-stop information hub which disseminates knowledge on the Funicular Train, cultivate appreciation of rich cultural history of Penang Hill and awareness of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. It was an ambitious vision to restore and convert a relatively small Bungalow into a world-class public building with a humble budget. The building transformation and construction began at early 2020, hampered by the pandemic but soldiered through to complete in June 2022.
